STATS

Hwang Haru has always been quiet, not many friends. He keeps his head down and does his work, he got excellent grades all throughout elementary and middle school. He prefered to observe rather than participate in whatever activity was going on.Being observant he was always able to catch the moods of people around him. He was able to recognize patterns and determine outcomes before they happened. He always knew how to stay out of trouble and avoid people at the right times. This came in handy later when his father turned to drinking and became physically abusive. He was alway able to tell just what kind of beating and how hard of one he'd get based on what alcohol his father reeked of.

  IMPORTANT PORTRAYAL NOTES

  • Due to the psychological hold that his father has on Haru, he still lives with his father and during every full moon he is banished to the basement that was specifically designed by his father to contain a Lycan. The walls are lined with silver and the perimeter has wolfsbane scattered.

  • Haru has limited funds, almost all his money goes to his father. He was able to keep a small fund, less than a 1 million won in his bank account from his previous job. All betting funds are made through his fights and go directly to his father as well as his income for being a constant on the Viper Room schedule.

  • He struggles with guilt and self-hatred, even on nights where his father tells him not to throw a fight and to win, he usually lets his opponent win the first round, roughing him up enough because he feels as though he deserves it for what he's done. Even if it was his father's fault, he still can't stomach what he did against his will.

HISTORY

TRIGGER WARNINGS: Mentions of terminal cancer, alcoholism, abuse, physical assault, manipulation, & death (adult & child)

Life wasn’t always so bad. When Haru had both of his parents, he lived a happy and healthy childhood loved by both his parents unconditionally. He had grown up an only child for most of his life, until he was twelve years old. He was given the exciting news that he was going to be a big brother, that he had a baby sister on the way.Haru was ecstatic about the news and he was always helping his mother in planning for the baby, names, room colors, toys, clothes, he was really excited. His father was too… until a few months in. When he came home from school he could hear his parents fighting in the kitchen. Neither of them had noticed that he had come home yet. Quietly he snuck around the corner to listen in on their conversation.Mom had cancer… they would have to terminate the pregnancy in order for her to get chemotherapy, but Mom didn’t want that. She wanted to wait until the baby was delivered and then get chemotherapy. Dad argued that they didn’t have enough time for that, they had caught that cancer late and she needed immediate treatment. The baby was going to kill her. They could always try for another child later, but Dad didn’t want to lose his wife. The house grew cold as both parents opposed each other’s views, ultimately it was Mom’s decision and she decided not to receive treatment and keep the baby. Dad started working late, going out to the bars at night, and coming home drunk. He said he refused to watch his wife kill herself and slept on the couch, isolating himself not only from his wife, but his son too. Most nights Haru would climb into his parents bed to comfort his Mom who was deeply affected by her husband’s actions, cuddled her son for comfort.

Haru became his parents' caretaker as they both deteriorated. Dad started drinking more and more. Haru would lay a blanket over him at night, place a trash can near his head, and add a bottle of water and tylenol on the coffee table for him. He’d make his Mom food, help her get in and out of bed, put on her socks and shoes. Her health started to rapidly decline, her body couldn’t support keeping her and the baby alive. Eventually she became bed bound and completely reliant on Haru. She was only 30 weeks into her pregnancy when her water broke and contractions started. With Dad being at work it was left to Haru to call 119 and get an ambulance to come and help his Mom. Haru held onto his mother’s hand in the back of the ambulance and once they reached the hospital he was taken by one of paramedics as they rest rushed her into the emergency room.No matter how much he asked, he wasn’t allowed to see her as doctors worked on her and the baby girl. He was supposed to wait for his Dad to come to the waiting room. He’s not sure how much time elapsed, but it felt like forever when his Dad finally walks in. His eyes are distant, cold, and like always he smelt of alcohol. He had been preparing for this day since their fight in the kitchen, just waiting for the news. He knows what comes next and all the two of them could do is wait and hope for a miracle.A doctor comes looking for the both of them and his face is solemn and apologetic, he starts his sentence with, “We did the best we could…” Tears well up in Haru’s eyes and his world stops spinning when he’s told that his mother didn’t make it through the delivery, there wouldn't be a miracle today.

The thirteen year old starts bawling at the loss of his mother, but his Dad doesn’t react, he’s cold as ice. The only good news the doctor had to share was that even though the baby was premature, she was going well, her lungs were healthy, they just wanted to keep her in the hospital for a few weeks to make sure she hits all her growth milestones.“Do what you will.” His dad says and with he takes Haru’s hand and starts to lead him to the exit. He’s begging, pleading, for his dad to let him say goodbye to his mom, to see his little sister. He’s struggling against his hold, but his dad is bigger than him, stronger than him. “I don’t even know her name!” He shouts as he hits his dad’s arm.“Haehee!” The doctor calls out conflicted with the scene in front of him. “Hwang Haehee.”Haru, who is supposed to be finishing his second year of middle school, drops out in the middle of the term. When all of his friends come back from summer vacation, his seat and cubby are now empty. He spends his time self-studying at the NICU, making sure that Haehee isn’t alone, her brother is there for her.

Dad’s drinking gets worse. Soon he’s fired from his job in construction, he’s been showing up to work reeking of alcohol and he was too much of a liability with all the heavy machinery that they work. A once loving dad becomes abusive, Haru is the target of his drunken tirades, his father often degrading him as he wasted his opportunity with dropping out of school. Taunting him about how he’ll become a nothing. He doesn’t even show when Haehee is discharged from the hospital. The staff knows better than to release a baby to a freshly turned teenager, but knowing the boy’s situation at home, they help forge his father’s signature and Haru gently, but securely holds onto Haehee from the hospital, all the way on the bus ride, and the walk to their home. Arms aching he gently sets her down on a blanket on the floor of his room. He has a few things he kept from before his Mom got sick, they had gone shopping for some clothes for Haehee. He knows they’re not going to last as babies grow fast… and with his father without a job… Haru would need to get one.

It’s almost impossible to find a job as a thirteen year old with a baby, but someone finally takes pity on him. An ajumma that owns a convenience store, she’ll let Haru work there and keep Haehee behind the counter while he works. She even gives him a pay advance to buy a stroller for Haehee, that way she has a safe place to sit while he works and he doesn’t have to carry her always.Haru is a quick learner, in no time he’s in a steady routine, him and Hwanhee at work, between his duties and taking care of his little sister he studies what he’s supposed to be learning at school. It’s a lot to handle, especially when he manages to get home, always getting in trouble for buying things for his little sister. When his father is really drunk Haru gets bruises all over and he does his best to cover them, but it’s hard to manage the ones on his face. His boss takes pity on him and supplements his pay with things specifically for a young teenage boy, clothes, books, treats, sometimes a full meal to take home. This was Haru’s life for the next five years. With his father taking most of his money he didn’t have enough money to enroll Haehee in daycare, but when she’s old enough for Kindergarten he makes sure to take shifts at the convenience store around the same time Haehee is at school. Though sometimes he needs more hours, more money so he can afford to buy her new clothes and school supplies, he picks up late nights where he knows his father is still at the bar and Haehee can stay in the backroom and watch cartoons on his phone till she falls asleep as he watches her on the CCTV behind the register.

At nineteen Haru takes a day off of work for the High School Equivalency Exam, as a middle school drop out, that was his only option to show all the knowledge he acquired through self study the past six years. He feels good taking the exam and now he just has to wait four weeks until his test results are posted. Wanting to celebrate he picks Haehee up from school and she comes running into his arms, picking her up he twirls her around and promises that they’ll go and get ice cream tonight. Excited, the first-grader asks if she can play with her friends first, pointing to another little girl and what looks to be their Mom.Haru politely bows and mouths if that was alright and the Mom smiles and nods, he exchanges numbers with the Mom and reluctantly lets her go. Her first friend, Haru wasn’t the only one making milestones. With nothing else to do as he took off the whole day he finds himself wandering the street food stalls, he doesn’t usually buy things for himself, but he deserves a treat today. He watches as a group of middle schoolers stand around a tteokbokki kart together, it’s bitter sweet to watch as he never got the chance to enjoy that. Tonight he'd enjoy it alone. He finds a spot at the cart by himself and orders for one. He takes his time savoring the fresh taste as for the past six years he’s only ever had microwavable tteokbokki. His phone starts to buzz and he takes it out of his pocket. “Oppa! Can I stay for dinner? Then we can get ice cream!” Glancing at the clock on his phone he puts it back to his ear letting his sister know it’s alright. “Make sure to say please and thank you.” He reminds her before telling her to enjoy.

He wasn’t going to get in the way of her enjoying a home cooked meal for once, but that left him with more free time than he was expecting. After finishing his tteokbokki he pays and thanks the ajumma before wandering around for a while. He comes across a hiking trail and figures he’d just walk around it until it was time to pick up Haehee. What Haru didn’t know is that tonight would truly mark new beginnings. It starts to get dark outside and he’s constantly checking his phone to see if Haehee has called him. Nothing yet. Sighing softly he stares up at the sky and notices a full moon. He takes a moment to appreciate the brightness that contrasts the dark of the night sky, until he hears rustling in the woods. Startled, he glances around, but sees nothing. It must have been some sort of animal. Feeling a bit uneasy he decides to start making his way down the trail, he’s about midway down when he hears a growl and his blood runs cold.Panicked, he starts to run and he can hear something chasing him. Sprinting as fast as he can, something grabs him by the leg and he lets out a scream as his hands scurry to find something, anything. A fallen branch, he uses it to stab whatever has his heel and while he hears them yelp he starts to make a run for it again and he doesn’t stop until he’s made it out to the streets in a densely populated area. With the adrenaline wearing off his entire ankle up to his mid calf is torn, blood pouring down his leg. He’s sweating, swaying, people are staring at him and that’s the last thing he remembers before passing out.Haru wakes up in the hospital bright lights blinding and machines beeping far too loud. He then feels someone jump on his side and he groans as he sees Haehee with an expression that can only be read as concern and relief all in one. “Oppa! Oppa! You’re awake!” She says before the tears well up in her eyes.“The doctors said you’re hurt. Do you still hurt? They can fix it!” She insists and Haru wraps his arms around her and as his vision comes too he sees Haehee’s friend’s mom by his bed. Sitting up he apologizes to both of them and thanks the mother for taking care of Haehee. She offers to take Haehee back home for a sleepover and Haru takes a moment to think it over.“Is it okay if we get ice cream tomorrow? Don’t you want to spend the night with your friend?” He asks to the pouting first grader who seems a bit reluctant. “I promise I’ll take you tomorrow.” Holding out his pinky, Haehee takes it with her own and nods. “Promise.”

Her friend’s mom takes her back to her house and the nurses and doctors come to fill him in on what happened to him as they know it. He had been attacked by something that had damaged his leg enough to need surgery to repair the muscles. He should be off his leg and resting, physical therapy would have to come after. Haru didn’t have the time or money for that, he didn’t have the time or money to be in the hospital. His face pales when he realizes that his Dad would be back soon and him not being there, there would be hell to pay when he does make it home. He’s kept overnight and his anxiety continues to grow the longer he’s there. When he’s finally able to be discharged he’s placed in a boot and given crutches to walk around in. The poor kid is already exhausted as he makes it out of the hospital. It’s just after lunch time when he finally makes it home and he’s immediately met with his drunk and pissed off father.First comes the yelling, where the fuck have you been, what the fuck is this, what the fuck did you do, and so on and so forth. His father is ripping the crutches out of his hands and throwing them back at Haru talking about how much this is going to cost him in hospital bills. How the hell is he going to get any money out of Haru if he can’t work. The usual thirty minutes of abuse before his father passes out from exhaustion and drunkenness turns into ninety minutes of abuse before his father lets up on him and crashes on the couch. Haru is just thankful that Haehee is at school and not here as he cries from all the bruises and pain to his ankle.Haru’s supposed to take off for work, but he can’t afford it. He moves around the best he can considering it’s a small convenience store. His co-workers always make sure the shelves are stocked before he comes, which means he can just sit behind the register until a customer comes. It’s almost been a month and Haru starts to feel odd. Usually level headed he’s quick to anger and frustration, he’s more anxious than usual and he can’t sit still even with his boot. For the first time ever he fights back when his father raises a hand to him.Haru shocks himself when his automatic reaction was fight rather than defend. He sees his father is in shock too, but what he doesn't see is his father noticing the green flecks in the boy’s eyes that weren’t there before. Realization clicks in the old man’s mind and he lets his son be, causing confusion.

The next few days are the oddest that the siblings have ever experienced with their father was held up in the basement of their home. Haru couldn’t remember the last time he saw his father in his workshop, it was probably when he still had a job and that hasn’t been the case for years.Honestly it was the best few days the siblings encountered, but soon the worst would come. Haru’s mood continued to deteriorate and he felt like he wanted to jump out of his own skin. That’s the night his father comes out of the basement and pushes his son down the stairs of the basement.Haehee screams as she watches her brother tumble down and he grabs her by the waist and shuts the door, locking it from the outside. Haru hits the ground and the world starts to spin a little, his body hurts, but it doesn’t hurt like it should, that tumble should have hurt more.Groaning he holds his head as it throbs and he starts to feel rather weak. With one light on he can see the walls are lined with metal– silver? There were also these purple flowers that lined the walls as well. What the hell was all this? The confusion doesn’t last long as pain suddenly takes over and he starts to scream as it feels like all the bones in his body were being broken, no it wasn’t just a feeling, it was actually happening. Haru watches in horror as his body begins to shift bones snapping and reshaping, hair growing, nails elongating, fangs emerging from his canines.Soon the screams were replaced with howls. It’s not until the morning that Haru comes too, passed out on the basement floor. Blinking slowly at the ceiling he pushes himself up and winces as he looks down at his hands, his nails short and tips bleeding. Looking down on the floor he notices claw marks like something with razor sharp nails was trying to break free through the ground, how is that when Haru was the only on in the basement.

Haru’s stomach drops as he starts to piece things together, the attack last month during the full moon, the shift in his mood, things not hurting as much as it should. The feeling of bones breaking and reshaping, losing the entire night and waking up with no memories. He starts feeling sick to his stomach and he starts to have a panic attack as he realizes he’s no longer human, he’s some sort of monster now.Just as he’s in the middle of his panic the basement door swings open and his father stares down at him from the top of the stairs. “I would have thought you’d do more damage, disappointing that you’re still weak. We’ll change that though.” He says with his mouth curling up into a cruel smile. “Get up, I have a new job for you. Hurry before I lock you down here again.” He threatens before turning away from his son.For the first time ever his father is interested in Haehee. He keeps her at arms length always which keeps Haru on edge. He’s using her as bait, keeping her close as a threat. Haru must listen to him or else he’ll turn on the young girl and he doesn’t want that.Haru is forced to quit his job and throughout the next month his father’s beatings come harder and more frequent, he claims to be teaching Haru how to fight, shouting at him different ways to block and defend. There’s some sort of plan the man has that Haru hasn’t pieced together yet, but he can’t do anything about it if he wants to keep Haehee safe.

Another month has passed and Haru gets shoved into the basement again, the transformation is just as painful as it was the first time and just like the first time Haru wakes up in the morning with no memory of what he’s done down in the basement other than the markings he leaves.“Get up. It’s time.” His father says letting the sunlight filter in from the top of the stairs. Haru walks up the stairs and his father hands him a flyer, on it is the name “The Viper Room” and underneath is a list of names and on that list is “Hwang Haru.”Confusion crosses his face and his father scoffs. “You’re fighting tonight and you better throw it. I am betting against you, this is our way to get rich quick you understand? You need to lose. Put up a good go, make it look believable.” He says grabbing a beer as he sits at the dining table, putting his feet up on it as he takes a swig. “Or don’t and I’ll make Haehee pay for your inability to listen.”Haru’s life is now fully in his father’s hands whether he has to win or lose, none of the money goes to him as it all goes to his father. He’s worse off than he ever was and his concern for Haehee grows as she’s being used as a pawn. He needs to get them out from under their father’s rule so Haru comes up with a plan, he’s going to throw the next flight and throw it so bad that he’ll need to be checked by paramedics, taken away where his father can’t see him and needs to wait. He’d then escape out the back door and grab Haehee so they can run away.Apparently he’s not as smart as he thought he was because as soon as he’s sneaking out the back he’s being grabbed by the nape and thrown to the ground by none other than his father. “You think you’re so smart? You think I wouldn’t see right through your guise?” He sneers breath reeking of booze as it always does. “I’ll show you boy.” He says lifting him up and shoving him until they reach home. “Enjoy your time down in the basement. It’s five days till the full moon.” He says tossing his son down there once more without a care.

Haru feels like he’s going insane down in the basement, he’s weak, exhausted, hungry, thirsty. He has no idea what time it is as there are no windows in the basement that lead outside. When the basement door opens next he thinks his father is finally giving him something, but instead he sends Haehee down the steps and Haru immediately starts to panic. He springs up the stairs and starts begging, pleading for his father to open the door, to let Haehee out, not to do this, that he’ll do any and everything his father tells him to do.Haru is sobbing while Haehee looks scared and confused. All she wants is to be comforted by her bigger brother, but Haru flinches away from her and tries to keep his distance as he’s sobbing. This had to be a cruel joke, his father was bound to take her out before the full moon, he wouldn’t go this far. But he would. Haru feels his bones start to shift and he wails knowing exactly what will happen when he blacks out. He spends his final moments pleading for his father, but it falls on deaf ears. The next morning when Haru wakes he’s covered in blood. Slowly he turns around to see scraps of what used to be his sister and he immediately vomits onto the concrete. He sobs refusing to believe what just happened, but he keeps heaving, keeps getting sick. With all the noise he’s making his father opens the door, his gaze cold and cruel, no sympathy or remorse on his face. “This is what happens when you defy me. Get up, you have a fight tonight, this time you’re not going to throw it.”Haru does as he’s told, his eyes dull and hollow, void of any life in them. He’s entirely on auto pilot, living life as he’s told, grieving for his sister. Haru is now 22, still under his father’s thumb doing as he’s told. He fights three nights a week and does his best to throw and win fights to his father’s liking. Every evening before the full moon he’s locked in the basement and all he can do is stare at the blood stained concrete until his transformation takes over. Blacking out he’s only allowed out in the morning when he comes to again. This is his cycle of rinse and repeat.

Change in plans, the outside fighter on the roster was a no show, instead of canceling the fight between Haru and the outside, it's decided that two of the employees will fight it out. At least tonight was one of the nights his father told him to throw, it shouldn't go too bad. That is until you start to catch on that Haru is pulling his punches and dropping his guard on purpose. Haru loses as planned, but what kind of stunt is he trying to pull? What emotions pop up when you confront him about the fight?

One of the promises he made with his little sister sits deep within him in and festers. He remembers the pinky promise as if he had just given it moments ago. Her small finger wrapped around his as he promised her they'd get ice cream. Haru hasn't touched the cold sweet treat since the day he fulfilled that promise. He can't help but find himself sitting across the street staring at the ice cream shop they went to as it's the last happy memory he has with his little sister. What will you do when you see him?

Even with his face all scuffed up with bruises and cuts and once brown hues of eyes turning to green, Haru is undeniably someone you went to school with. You remember him as the quiet kid, the one who kept his head down, never volunteered for anything, but always got really good grades. Until one day he had disappeared after summer break. His desk and cubby empty, no one knew what happened to him or where he went. Will you approach him to figure out what happened and try and catch up?

Haru doesn't remember the last time he had someone be kind to him. He's so used to the punches and the kicks, the bruises and cuts, none of that makes him flinch. But a gentle hand? That has him moving away in distrust. Will you persist? Seeing the boy all battered and bruised will you take care of him? Be the first person to do so since his mother died, since he was forced to quit his job with the ajumma who often brought him food and work bonuses. Will Haru even trust you with such a task?

Mentor

It's said that Lycans often lose themselves to insanity. Not many are lucky enough to find a mentor to help them connect with the wolf inside. Haru is one of the unlucky, he has no idea who turned him, but from how feral they were it was probably another Lycan. Which would have done him no good in learning to harmonize with the wolf. Instead he continues to allow his father to lock him up in the basement during full moons. But maybe you can show him that it doesn't always have to be like that.

Something about the fighter caught your attention. Was it the lack of light behind his eyes? The way he keeps his head down? How he's always adorned with cuts and bruises on his body, but never flinches? Are you interested in trying to piece together what's clearly a broken man or are you interested in seeing just how far you can poke and prod him till he fully breaks? Either way you're going to find out and that starts with inserting yourself before perhaps you start to bid not on the fights, but the slave himself.
